terrace design and big french pots!

Our terrace extension is finally nearly finished - only 4 months behind schedule :) .... - and I am thinking about how we'll use the bigger space.

I have always used plenty of pots on the terrace, to break the straight lines and to bring the green and the flowers closer to the house.  I suppose it is a fairly English garden look, with plenty of flowers, strawberries in pots, sweet peas growing up canes ...  you get the picture.

But now we have a little more space, and now that my garden is taking shape after our remodelling, I am wondering whether I should keep it less busy.  More pared down.

Of course, what you do with a terrace, depends a lot on what else is going on around...

If you have a château surrounded by 300 year old trees, then you don't need much in the way of pots and flowers to make your terrace look good;

and if you look out over a view that is so beautiful, that you could be standing in a pile of mud, it wouldn't matter .... then you probably want to keep the terrace as pared down as possible;

but sometimes you can have a stunning house with a stunning view and still find  a way to place a couple of spectacular pots  to great effect, like at our friends house here, and his pots of pale blue plumbago....

so what do you think I should do?
keep it busy and flowery and family style,
or go chic and pared down and altogether more grown up?

go on tell me!   I'd love to know!

therapy in my french country garden

A busy week here, but a few moments were found at the end
of the day to enjoy that special light and tend the garden

Some people call it gardening

I call it therapy

Hope you got your dose of green this week ...

Happy summer solstice!

french spring flowers

With spring having a little trouble arriving in France, we have to take our chances and pop out into the garden between showers to bring a little spring time colour indoors.

just a few blooms, in just a few pitchers

a pop of spring colour to wake up a rainy afternoon!

my french country garden - your opinion please

last June's lupins

In the middle of a big re-working of the garden here, and the late arrival of spring seems to be on my side as I dither and hesitate in choosing new plants.

I have always gone, quite naturally, for a sort of cottage garden style with big mixed borders, rambling climbers and a romantic rambling style, but times are a changing ....

this is not my house! but oh! what a beautiful façade!

I find myself more easily drawn to bold statements, to blocks of flowers rather than tapestry borders.  Of course this bolder planting also makes for easier maintenance (I hope!).

I have  a little help to hand in the shape of a knowledgeable and charming gardener who stops by now and again, and it is always helpful to hear his ideas.

Right now he is trying to persuade me that two wisteria trees planted in front of the house would be a good idea. ....... I'm having a little trouble with that - it's amazing how difficult it is to visualise a new style!

You may remember that I mentioned Les Jardins Agapanthes, here in Normandy.  I'll be returning there next month, and I readily admit to being influenced by their style of planting.

Les Jardins Agapanthes, Grigneuseville, Normandy

So ... I wondered if you could help me with your good ideas? ....

We have enlarged the symmetrical beds in front of the house, and are about to move the pair of central boxwood bushes.   The beds will each measure about 6 meters or 18' wide, and approx 4 meters or 9' deep - that 's quite big spaces to fill and keep tidy!

I'm thinking that I'll plant some big hydrangeas, allium, agapanthus, maybe groups of white foxgloves, I could put in some lavender .... I'd be happy to stick to whites, blues and greys, but I know I need some height and bulk.

I know that many of you enjoy your gardens as much as I do, and I wondered whether you have experience of changing your style?  Is it really as difficult as it feels, or will I get used to it pretty fast?

Thank you for your input, I always listen carefully when you give me your advice.

snowdrop sunday

No matter how many boxes of snowdrops I give away to friends each year, I just seem to have more and more in the garden.

At this time of year they are sparkling bright beneath the magnolia tree as well as popping up uninvited in other beds and borders.

I try to make the most of these extra guests by bringing them indoors for a while.  My favourite way is to simply dig up small clumps and pop them into these old vintage pots, adding a little moss to hide the earth.

They may not last for long, but for a few days we'll have their delicate beauty to admire close up.

wishing you a lovely sunday ...

grey and white in the garden

A busy day today, but a glimpse at my autumn garden ... and not an orange leaf in sight!!

I hope you're not fed up with my white dahlias,  I just can't keep my eyes off them,
and the more I pick, the more heads grow!

This week it is all about grey and white -
pumpkins  in my potager this year are all creamy white.

My little bit of garden fun for today.
A grey and white vignette for a very grey day.
From me to you with best blogging love!  :)

dahlias from my french garden

One of the the cool things about writing a blog is that I can justify, to myself at least, taking half an hour out from work and fooling around with flowers in my garden.

Today is grey, and damp, and sort of fuzzy, with a little normandy drizzle falling from the sky  ... and I love it!  I know that those of you heading into summer in Australia or enjoying gentle sunshine in California, may think I'm mad, but there is comfort in grey damp weather.

So with a little help from two young men I found hanging around in the garden ...

I started wandering around with my camera and secateurs....

then I got out a table, and a few props ....

and before I knew it, I had a little photo shoot going on here ....

It doesn't take much to keep me happy ...

and a little later on I had to put everything away, then thought these colours would like nice in a tureen I found at a fair on Sunday, .....  so I'm afraid you now have to sit through a few more !

I hope you enjoyed the pics!

early autumn in my french garden

We are at that special moment in the year when summer starts to blend ever so gently into sunny autumn.  There are specific perfumes on the breeze, the first tinges of colour in the leaves, and with the help of dahlias, asters and zinnias, the garden does it best to show that autumn can be just as good as spring.

Early mornings are filled with heavy dew, and the evening air weighs chilly on our shoulders.  We are not yet lighting fires each evening, but we have already reached for some warmer clothes.

How I love a change of season .....

Here are a few shots taken in the garden, sedum, hydrangeas, asters and dahlias, and even the wisteria putting out a few last minute blooms.   Autumn in Normandy is starting well.
