HUGS FROM GRAMMY

This is me with my Grammy.

Some of you know her already...
I shared a bit about Grammy and how special she is to me
about a month ago in this post

(Just so you know...this is not a fun decorating post~
stop reading now if you would like to-
I won't be offended or hurt at all)

I wasn't sure when I would share what has been going on lately.
I have been trying to just do regular things and what not
and really, I wasn't sure when or if I would hit 'publish' on this post.
I mean, this blog is about decorating & fun stuff...

Honestly, visiting your posts, blogging, doing the regular routine
and trying to get some decorating done has been such a great diversion for me and I have needed it.

When I started blogging
I had no idea that I would meet so many wonderful people out here-
that I would find so much friendship and so much support.
It is such a blessing and I appreciate all of your kindness so much.

So here goes...

My grandparents were always a big part of my life while I was growing up
and my grandmother and I were especially close
from the time I was born...

For the past 3o+ years,
I have been so incredibly blessed to have been loved, nurtured and adored
by a wonderful woman,
my grandmother...

On Saturdays, when I was little
I would spend the night at her house and we would watch
'The Bionic Woman' together
She taught me to sew, showed me how to bake & shared her recipes.
Thanksgiving was her Holiday~ she loved that all the family would come up
and celebrate together
and her mashed potato casserole is tradition.

When I was 8,
and my parents divorced, and as a child you feel like you don't
know what is solid ground when that happens.

Grammy was a constant-
someone who was there no matter what.

When both of my parents remarried and my brother and I weren't sure
where we fit in the new families.
she reassured that we were loved
even if it seemed like it wasn't true.

In high school-
I was searching for my place in my world.
Truth be told, I was pretty darn unlovable for awhile
and I made it very easy to give up on me...
Of course, my parents didn't give up on me,
but they are parents...
and they seem against you and you hate them the most at that age.

But Grammy wasn't like my parents to me and found a way to love me more

She and my grandfather drove across the country to meet each of my babies
when they were born
She held them and adored them for hours and it was so special to watch her
with my children.

When she got dementia about 4 1/2 years ago,
we all knew that the road ahead was going to be hard.
It became even harder as the Grammy we knew was hidden,
bit by bit...

Over time...
She didn't know her family any longer...
that she had two sweet babies,
6 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren...
That she had been married to my grandfather since she was 19 years old...
or that he had passed away last year...

It was so sad to realize that she had so many experiences and wonderful memories of her life,
that she didn't know about any longer.
and it has been difficult for all of us
as we have watched little bits and pieces of her leave.

It has been hard to separate
and accept that there would be a time when
she would no longer be here.

Which brings us to today....

Just a few weeks ago,
while I sat with with her in the care home where she lived,
Grammy looked at me and told me that I needed to go do my own things now.
She asked if I understood what she was saying
and told me that it was hard for her to say it ...
During the next couple of visits,
she told me several times how very much she loved me
and loved everyone in our family.

Just before Thanksgiving,
I watched her holding her sweet baby dolls as she sang to them.
'Yes, sir , that's my baby....'
she sang the entire song,
then kissed them and told them to be good
and handed them to me.

Even though it was so upsetting and I was in tears, I was smiling as I watched her
because I knew that the Grammy we had all been missing for so long was there
and it was such a gift to have her back if even just for a few moments.

That night, I prayed that she would be safe and loved when she left.
That she would be in the arms of Heaven
and would remember all those memories that had been taken away while she was here.
That she would be that mother and grammy again.
It was so hard for me to not ask for her to stay.

My sweet grandmother is with my grandfather now.

I know that she is okay now
and I do feel her all around me,
it doesn't feel like she has left.

I feel so incredibly blessed that she was my grandmother
and that my children were able to know her
and we have all been so fortunate to have her in our lives.
~
Several months ago,
she told me that she thought we would always be close
no matter what...
and asked me if I thought so too.

I told her I did.

I love her so much and will miss her forever.

ANIMAL PRINT LOVE

While at my mothers house for Thanksgiving...
I noticed a wee little trend appearing all over the place...

Or should I say obsession ...

It first showed itself in the living room...
on a couple of throw pillows
and a modern side table.

Then it appeared just a few times in her closet...

decorating her
shoes...
hats...
& quite a few handbags...

even her clothes hangers got some animal print love...

She's a wild one for sure! :)
Zebra, cow and giraffe print covered her
Coffee mugs, plates and rugs...

& the formal antique dining chairs had little zebra seat covers.

Mickey their yorkie couldn't even escape it covering his bed...
I think he is beginning to worry a bit that his next sweater
will be leopard print...

After all, the animal print decorated everything...
even my mother!

So, do you think this might be a bit of a problem?
Should we do an intervention?
Or seek help from the
APA?

'Animal Printaholics Anonymous'?

Frankly, she has always been a wild and crazy kind of girl...
maybe that is where we all get it from...
I have to admit, we are all kind of a crazy bunch out here
So I guess animal print would be a natural choice for my mom to be
decorating her world with.
It is just like her...
wild, crazy & lots of fun!
Love it!

Isn't my mother adorable?
She approved this post and thought it would be fun~
No animals were harmed in the decorating of either
my mother or her home!
LOL!

LOVE YOU MOM!

NOW I KNOW WHERE TO FIND ME...

This is my grandmother.

We have always been incredibly close-since I was a little girl...
she always said I was like her 3rd baby...
She has been one of my biggest supporters,
encouraged my every step and loved me no matter what.

One of the reasons I moved to the area where we live now
was to be near her and take care of her
and my grandfather as they got older and
I really wanted her to know my children and for them to know her-
thankfully that happened before dementia.

She has what they say is advanced dementia and now lives in a locked care facility-
So much has happened in the past couple of years...

I feel so fortunate and blessed to have my grandmother here
and to be able to hold her hand and talk to her,
but I would be lying if I told you that it didn't hurt my heart to see her sometimes.

Everything that made up 'Grammy' is hidden now...

But somewhere inside, I know she is there.

She has always known my daughter and I until recently...
it is so hard to walk in with that big smile and say hello and have someone not even know you are there.
But even so,
I am so happy to take what ever it is that she has to offer from day to day.

My daughter and I were visiting the other day...
Grammy was holding her babies and loving them-
(she thinks the dolls are real babies- we are used to it.)
She was smiling ,cooing & chatting to them...
and then telling us just how beautiful she thought they were...
Of course, we agreed.

Grammy was in a great mood,
we laughed and enjoyed the smiles she shared and the funny things she said...

On the door to her room there is a piece of paper that has her name written on it.

'BETTY'

It's been there for several months...
but the other day she noticed it for some reason and said to my daughter

"Look it, there's my name on the wall..."

Ansley replied
"Yes...this is your room Grammy."

"Oh good!"
she replied with a smile.

"Now when I'm lost...
I know where to find me."

:)

Sometimes, I think I need one of those signs...

FEATHERED NEST FRIDAY No. 5 & TEA PARTY

Behind our house, we have a wooded area filled with blackberry bushes, oak & cedar trees and lots of little creatures.
There are little clearings here and there, and a few paths that meander through the bushes and trees
and lead further into the woods.
You never know just what you may find when you venture into the forest...

In the midst of one of those paths, there was a little tea party taking place-
graciously hosted by Miss Bella.

A dainty table & two itsy bitsy chairs...

a french ticking quilt ~ soft blue stripes, tiny little flowers & scalloped edge- so charming!

A chocolate pot & two wee cups & saucers

A diminutive bird feeder held a few starfish and a sweet lavender bouquet.

A little bowl of fresh picked blackberries...yum!

& a basket of harvest apples amongst the fall leaves.

Miss Bella set a very pretty table for her two darling little friends
who were stopping by for a nibble and spot of tea.

Is that them coming now?

They just love a good party & wore their prettiest ribbon attire to the affaire!

Such a lovely day for a tea!

You just never know what you will find if you venture into the forest!

Exhausted after hosting such a sweet affaire,
Miss Bella took a little nap on one of the new pillows she has decided are hers.

Phew!

Girls Beach Weekend & Something Inspiring...

Thank you so much to all who participated in Feathered Nest Friday this week!!
I found so much inspiration in your posts and met so many new friends!
If I haven't gotten over to visit you yet...give me a wee bit of time... I was out of the area for the weekend and left my computer at home- I will get over to say hello soon!
~

So here's what I did this weekend that kept me from blogging -
My sister, daughter and I headed to Pismo Beach for a girls trip!
We LOVE the beach and it is the first place we thought of going for our girls weekend
but had a few other things we were planning on doing as well.

My sister wanted to drive somewhere on the freeway
other than the local areas where she lives.

The freeways in California are insane...
if you have ever been to L.A. you can understand.
So she has been a little shy about getting on the freeway and going too far.
For our girls weekend, she decided to notch off that goal and she was planning on
driving half the way to Pismo after we got through busy San Jose.

(Taylor looking a wee bit unsure about the whole 'driving on the freeway' thing...)

(my daughter Ansley looking a wee bit frightened by Aunt Tay's driving...)

Well...Taylor did it!
She drove half the way down to Pismo,
the whole time we were in Pismo and ALL the way back
even through San Jose and up to the Bay Area!

We had some crazy fun in the car and on the trip- lot's of laughs... but I can't go into details!
(My mother would have a fit if she reads this!)

Let's just say I spent a lot of time holding the roll bars of Taylor's jeep on turns...
and we discovered a new phenomenon- every time Taylor talked while driving-
she pressed on the gas and the speed increased.

We did some shopping while there
My daughter found a book she had been searching for and discovered a new flavor of fruit smoothie she loves
We saw strange sights on the fwy over and over again..

(We thought these twin cars were insane.)

We found ourselves getting on or off on the wrong roads,
running out of gas (What?! Someone must've siphoned it ! )
and missing our turns more times than not
but hey, we saw a lot of things we would have not seen so it's all good.

We looked for a restaurant that should have been there...but was not.
(about the 5th time around the block we discovered it had closed.)
and we found ourselves in places we really had no intention of visiting
like the auto-mall parking lot that just kept going, and going, and going.

Avila Beach was a bit cool and overcast while we were there but we loved it nonetheless.

(yes...we took pictures of ourselves)

Adorable little shops in Avila Beach

Swings on the beach!

I also had something I wanted to do while we were there.
My friend Sandy from Tattered House in Northern California was selling at a great flea market going on in the area.
She talked about Remnants of the Past flea market and how fabulous it is and how many fantastic finds there are.
I knew there were lots of treasures and delightful things to be found and I was looking for
something in particular.

Here we are ~ looking bedraggled after a long day...
up at 4:30 a.m. people!

I walked in and looked around with my daughter and sister & mom-
who came along just for the day in search of a treasure of her own.

My eyes scanned the little booths,
the beautiful pieces, furniture, linens, salvage,
so much for purchase and so many people everywhere.

Warming up too much in the sun,
we ventured inside the barn and rounded a corner...
and look who we found!
