FADED FRENCH ELEGANCE

Shabby. Faded. French.

I love this wardrobe armoire.
I love it's worn finish
Creamy, soft colors & it's elegant french lines.

Old paint in a gorgeous shabby creamy white
and pale french blue.

Carved, curvy legs chipped so much that the bare wood shows through quite a bit
and the old patina... rubbed and distressed from real use & wear through the years
not from sandpaper and sweat.

I found this armoire several years ago in an antique store while looking for
something to hide the television in.

Meandering around the store, there were so many armoires.
Each one was beautiful- and perfectly restored or finished.

Which meant that nothing was talking to me~
I wanted painted, shabby & loved.

I went to the back of the store where they unload and tinker with pieces and found
a large (nearly 9' long!) wardrobe armoire with no doors on it.

Stately & elegant & painted & shabby.

and Perfect.

I caught my breath as I reached out to touch all it's details...
Carved shells, dainty scrolls , french drops in each corner, a gorgeous apron
and thick carved moulding on top.

The doors were at the store owners home
where she was in process of custom painting a design that she had drawn on them-
mimicking a high end armoire in a magazine.
Fortunately, she had not gotten too far yet and she brought them over for me.

Though the doors were covered with drawings,
I loved the very simple but elegant look they had and knew
a fresh coat of paint would fix it.

While repainting to cover the drawings,
the paint I was painting over started streaking away with the brush,
so I grabbed a cloth and rubbed the paint off and then stepped back
and looked at the original enamel finish that was coming through
in all it's faded blue and white gilded glory.

I LOVED IT.

The more I rubbed the later paint off, the more of the original finish was uncovered,
the more in love I was!

*sigh*

The gilded details coming out have required some chipping of the paint to reveal them, not done with that,
but the doors are the back to the original finish.
This armoire now sits to one side in our bedroom
holding lots of finds, fabrics, quilts
and books.

I am leaning towards a faded, soft, shabby Frenchy feel in the bedroom at the moment...
More natural, less color, more serene...

Several baskets and bins of faded
pink & cream hydrangeas,
bleached rustic wood crates, shabby urns and an antique birdcage
sit atop the armoire.

I love the juxtaposition of the elegant and the more rustic in this room~
the dark wood finishes mixed with the chipped paints.

Perfect Faded French Elegance.

SEASIDE COTTAGE

Down a sandy, bumpy road,
an old weathered cottage with silver shingles & shabby blue painted shutters
sits and waits for the weary travelers to visit.

There is lots of sand, surf and fun to be had
and every cottage has a view of the ocean.

On the porch,
is a shabby old willow basket filled with faded hydrangeas
that were cut from the garden...

a fisherman's old chippy wire basket
filled with creamy white seashells collected on lazy day walks
& a few little starfish & white pumpkins too...

A twig wreath covered in berries and weathered vines
welcomes you in and invites you
to stay awhile & make yourself at home.

Welcome to the Seaside Resort!
~
Between all the running around we did this weekend and all the rain,
I didn't get too much done...
but decided it was time to get working on some of those projects that I have been neglecting.

Remember these?

These are the old piano side pieces I found at a flea market and they have been
patiently waiting to be painted and shabbied up...
I loved their curves and details and envisioned them on the sides of a mirror or as shutters or who knows... I just knew I liked them!
I also knew when I bought them that I would paint them-
the finish was bubbled and uneven and they were talking shabby to me from the start.

Once the rain took a break for a bit,
I got out my paintbrush and painted them a mis-tint gray
thinking weathered, worn, bleached...
The color I painted them is gray...
and they did look gray-
outside.
But when it started raining again,
I brought them in the house,
and they looked blue.

Hmmm...
I will probably be layering a white paint on them as well but for now
I was kind of inspired by the blue...
It made me think of a charming little beach cottage,
blue sunny skies
the sounds of the ocean...
warm sand in between my toes & the salty sea breeze in my hair...

So I gathered up some of my beachy inspired bits
& put together a quick vignette atop one of the fireplaces.

I think I am ready for a warm beach cottage weekend !

THE QUEEN OF ALL THINGS SHABBY CHIC

Okay, here's what I found around the corner at the flea market...
THE Queen
of All things Shabby and Chic
Rachel Ashwell!

Sooooo excited!!!

She was shopping in a booth, purchasing a chair from a vendor-
a sweet little wooden chair with a thick fish net seat- see bottom pic.

She was there at the flea market do a book signing so I had brought along my book for her to sign- so glad I did because they didn't have any available when we got there!
When we found out that she would be attending a flea market when we were going to be in the Central Coast area we were just so excited!

I have to tell you.
She is just everything you would think she would be.
She is gracious and kind and so, so sweet!
She offered a warm friendly smile immediately and chatted with me
(love her accent!) while signing my book.

She stood with me for a few pictures and you can see,
I am clearly BEYOND excited in these photos!
I know, there have been many out there who have met her before
but to me...
to meet one of my design and personal idols is so amazing!
She is a huge inspiration to me!

Though my decorating style definitely includes
bold reds and rich wood patina- maybe more traditional,
I always have chippy painted shabby pieces in my house,
beautiful shabby inspired linens
and meaningful 'bits'.

Shabby Chic has influenced so many things.
I remember when we purchased our 'cottage'...
I knew the wood plank walls would be beautiful painted white...
the old cupboards had character....
the house had all the elements of being a warm shabby cottage home
even if it was tattered and worn.

I have perused her books for inspiration over & over and have always found it.
As well as her style, I have admired Rachel Ashwell as a person
and all that she has accomplished and become.

She is truly the Queen of shabby chic and it was such an honor to meet her!
